Last month, TCC was granted approximately 45 thousand dollars by the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) to support students’ mental well-being. These funds will help us in our concerted and strategic efforts to help students persist to program completion despite barriers, including mental health challenges. The bonus is that most of us (as faculty and staff) will also benefit from the use of those funds as we roll out institution-wide educational programs and training!
Bulleted below is what the ODHE approved for the remainder of this fiscal year (through June 30):
- Mental Health First Aid Training for Faculty and Staff (This will be offered institution-wide at our end-of-semester PD Day. Keep an eye out for more info as that date—May 2nd—gets closer!)
- Implementation of student Peer Support Groups
- Reimbursement to students for counseling services (to supplement Impact)
- Efforts to increase awareness of existing resources (Keep an eye out for more info about De-Stress Fest at the end of March!)
Each of these efforts will need to be assessed. As such, the Mental Health Framework group is currently collecting some baseline data from students by way of survey. (Encourage the students to take the survey, please! It’s short and accessible via Blackboard.) We’ll also have a survey soon for faculty and staff, so please keep an eye out for that. If you would like to be involved in Mental Health Framework subcommittees or activities like those described above, please email Meghan.Hollowell@TheChristCollege.edu.
