It's budget cycle time!

At the start of each spring semester, the college engages in planning and creating a budget for the following fiscal year. This comprehensive process is driven by members of leadership representing all departments, each of which conducts meetings and surveys to gather information and requests from faculty and staff. Every aspect of the budget is meticulously considered; several drafts are created and revised in collaboration with the Network Finance team before a proposal is presented to the Board of Directors.

Key elements of the budget include:

  • Capital Requests: These are items with a cost exceeding $5000 and depreciating in value.
  • Projected Revenue: Enrollment projections for the upcoming academic year are made for all programs, based primarily on historical trends, and the anticipated revenue associated with credit hours is calculated. Additional revenue sources such as student fees are also incorporated.
  • Operational Expenses: This encompasses budgetary items essential for the college to serve our students, fulfill our mission, and implement our strategic plan. Considerations range from supplies, equipment, and technology tools to memberships, subscriptions, travel, ceremonies, development opportunities, and accreditation expenses.
  • FTE Expenses: Salaries and benefits for employees across the college, including adjuncts, project pay, and bonus pay, are calculated. An analysis is conducted of FTEs necessary both currently and in the future, aligned with the strategic plan.

The budget cycle typically spans from January to March, so the work for Fiscal Year 2025 is almost done! The Board will provide feedback during their April meeting.

Mid-Semester Update

TCC Family,

As I move into my third month in the Interim President role, I want to say how grateful I am for all the encouragement I have received from many of you. It means more than you know. One of the most important things to me as a teammate (regardless of my position moving forward) is the culture of friendship and camaraderie we have here at the College. I am proud to say that this is the best organization I have been a part of in my career. We make it easy to belong, make lasting relationships, and find meaningful work.

If we look back over the last year, we have several significant things to celebrate and hold forth as examples of this meaningful work. Notably:

  • 10-year reaffirmation of our regional accreditation
  • Nearly a 14% year-over-year NCLEX improvement rate
  • Receiving a commitment of over $1 million in the Choose Ohio First grant
  • Implementation of our Biology Learning Labs, which led to an 8% increase in student pass rate (and shows no signs of stopping)
  • The launch of a new strategic plan that charts our growth over the next three years

While not completed as of today, we can also anticipate celebrating the following milestones:

  • Graduating our first-ever sonography class
  • Enrolling students in our new Rad Tech degree (we recently received authorization from the Ohio Department of Education and are anticipating approval from the Higher Learning Commission)
  • Hiring our fifth College President

I point all of this out as a reminder that we are a College heading in the right direction. Our momentum is not slowing down, even in the face of our challenges. This team of faculty, staff, and administrators is well-prepared heading into the next academic year. Take some time to congratulate and encourage each other. It really does mean more than you know!

Brad

Rad Tech Proposal Progress

One goal of the Strategic Plan approved in the fall by our Board of Directors is to grow TCC enrollment by expanding health sciences programs. As such, the approval process for an Associate of Applied Science in Radiographic Technology (Rad Tech) program is underway!

Generally, all new college program offerings must go through both state and national approvals to ensure rigor, efficacy, compliance with higher education standards, and alignment to professional competencies. At this juncture, the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) has approved the Rad Tech program, and the comprehensive Higher Learning Commission (HLC) application was submitted in March. We hope to receive feedback from HLC this month regarding required next steps.

If all goes according to plan, the goal is to begin enrolling students this summer for the Fall 2024 semester. A curriculum has been purchased and will be adapted to meet our students' needs, and we have collaborated with The Hospital Network to use existing equipment in the Medical Office Building. Due to clinical capacity, each cohort of the program will be limited to about 15 students.

Stay tuned for more exciting information as we draw nearer to the Rad Tech program becoming a reality!

De-Stress Fest Success

As you know, TCC was granted approximately 45 thousand dollars by the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) to support students’ mental well-being. These funds will help us in our concerted and strategic efforts to help students persist to program completion despite barriers, including mental health challenges. The bonus is that most of us (as faculty and staff) will also benefit from the use of those funds as we roll out institution-wide educational programs and training!

At the end of March, Student Success and the Mental Health Framework group sponsored De-Stress Fest to share relaxing activities and helpful resources. Below is some initial data from the event:

  • 76.7% of survey respondents (N=43) were able to identify at least two relaxing activities after attending the event; an additional 9.3% identified one activity
  • 58% of survey respondents were able to identify two well-being resources after attending the event; 34% identified one resource
  • When asked to what degree the event improved well-being, responses averaged 2.7 on a 4-point scale
  • When asked how supported they felt by TCC well-being resources, responses averaged 8 on a 10-point scale
  • When asked how likely they were to engage in well-being supports offered by TCC, responses averaged 7.6 on a 10-point scale
  • When asked how helpful IMPACT is, 60% of respondents indicated they’d never used the resource; 10 of these students reported no knowledge of IMPACT. 30% rated the helpfulness of IMPACT as a 3.8 on a 5-point scale (on average)
  • When asked if De-Stress Fest raised their awareness of well-being resources offered at TCC, respondents averaged a 4 on a 5-point scale
  • During the week of the event, there were 2 new inquiries about therapy reimbursement and 1 new reimbursement submission

De-Stress Fest also seemed to raise awareness of our efforts to get Peer Support Groups rolling for next academic year. So far, we've hired two group leaders--Ashley Herring and Cody Proffitt! Peer Support Group leaders will receive training this summer via IMPACT and a scholarship next year (per the Mental Health Grant) for their service to TCC.

Stay tuned for more exciting info from the Mental Health Framework group. We look forward to seeing you all at the Mental Health First Aid Training on May 2nd in Classrooms 111-113. Lunch will be included! Click here to register.
